To remove a chimney from top to bottom you  have to be fit a brackets. You dont need fit a brackets only if  you remove rest of the chimney above the roof. Roof have to be riper and much more room is in a loft.  If you have on a ground floor nice fireplace in use and you will like to remove a chimney above - that could be a done as well.
